Frequently Asked Questions
What is “demolition” material?
Demolition material means materials produced in the process of construction, renovation and/or demolition of structures. Demolition material typically include concrete, asphalt, wood, gypsum wallboard, glass, and roofing materials.
- 1. RRRSWA does NOT accept any material that contains asbestos.
- 2. Take large chunks of concrete to the Renville County Demolition Landfill
- 3. Shingle wrappers are NOT demolition, those belong in the garbage.
Can I recycle glass containers?
It depends!!
• YES: glass containers that originally contained food or beverage products are recyclable.
• NO: Canning jars, dishware, drinking glasses, glass bake or cookware, mirrors, incandescent light bulbs and window glass are examples of glass that is considered garbage.
Can I recycle plastic bags and other film plastic?
We do NOT accept film plastic of any kind for recycling. The best practice is to purchase and utilize re-usable shopping bags wherever possible. If you forget them, ask for paper (still recyclable!!) or have your groceries loaded back into your cart without bags. Keep totes in the trunk or cargo area of your vehicle to place groceries for the trip home.
All other types of film plastic (softener salt bags, large plastic wrapping for mattresses, television and stereo sheathing, bread bags, etc.) need to be disposed of in the garbage.
What should I do with my shredded paper?
• Bags or boxes of shredded paper placed in the cart or drop box can break open during transportation and will not end up in its intended place. If possible, bring your bags or boxes of shredded paper directly to the facility to ensure this material will get recycled.
• We have a specially marked cart outside the office doors during business hours for you to place your bags/boxes (please don’t dump contents) of shredding into. On inclement weather days, the cart is kept inside.
• Keep in mind that the RRRSWA has a secure document destruction service available at the facility so we can shred your personal documents for you! There is no charge for personal shredding and a nominal fee for businesses.
Can I choose my own recycling cart size?
All recycling carts are 96 gallons, with no additional size options available. The carts were selected as appropriate for the average amount of recycling materials generated by a typical household in a two-week period.
What if I only have enough recycling to fill my cart once a month?
You are not required to put your cart out for every collection. You may wait until it is full and then place it at curbside on your regularly scheduled day.
What if I’m unable to take my cart to the curb?
West Central Sanitation offers a “valet service” for this purpose. Contact West Central at 1-800-246-7630 to make arrangements.
What happens to my recycling cart if I sell my house?
Each cart has a chip embedded in it to identify the address of the user. If you plan to move, the cart needs to stay at the residence.
I live in an apartment building. How can I recycle?
Apartment owners, managers or landlords should contact West Central Sanitation at 1-800-246-7630 to determine the appropriate number of containers and collection frequencies.
When is the best time to put my cart by the curb for collection?
West Central Sanitation has advised that carts are placed BY 6:30 a.m. If snow or other inclement weather are not factors, you may put the cart out the night before to help ensure collection.
Can I put my garbage and my recyclables in the same container?
NO, residents are not allowed to commingle their garbage with recyclables. The carts are not interchangeable, so please keep garbage separated from recycling and in its own cart.
Can I bring my old stove/TV/washing machine, etc. to your facility?
• NO, please watch for information regarding the special collections held April-October each year in both counties.
• Call SW Recycling at 1-800-366-8665 for disposal alternatives.
• Call a scrap/salvage yard for alternative disposal options.
What do I do with old fluorescent or LED light bulbs?
If they are from a household, you can bring them to either the Redwood or Renville County Household Hazardous Waste Facilities.
Do you accept mattresses and other furniture at your facility?
YES, mattresses and other furniture are accepted. Please see the fee schedule for cost information. Mattresses MAY be recycled.
How can I dispose of my tires?
• Return them to any business that sells tires.
• Bring them to the Renville County Demolition Landfill during regular business hours.
1. You will likely pay disposal fees with either of these options.
▪ Landfill: please visit the landfill page for the current fee schedule.
▪ Tire business: please call the business to find out their pricing schedule.
If I live in a rural area, how do I dispose of my garbage?
• If you live in a rural area or a city without a garbage contract, please see our list for the current commercial waste haulers in your area who may be able to supply you with a garbage cart or dumpster. Check with the city administrator/clerk closest to your residence and inquire who their contracted hauler is for the best rate.
• If you choose to “self-haul” your garbage, to the Redwood/Renville Regional Material Recovery Facility located in Redwood Falls, please make sure you meet the following guidelines:
1. Use a leak-proof container (garbage bags without holes or tote boxes, etc.).
2. Please use a tarp/enclosed trailer or truck to ensure that no garbage blows out while transporting to the disposal site.
Can I use my debit/credit card to pay for my disposal?
NO, both the landfill and the transfer station only accept cash or checks for payment. Please bring small bills. Disposal costs are usually less than anticipated!

Medication Disposal
What is Pharmaceutical Waste?
Pharmaceutical waste includes a collection of expired and unused medications containing thousands of chemical substances, including prescription, over-the-counter therapeutic drugs, and veterinary drugs. When medicines are no longer needed it is important to dispose of them properly to help reduce harm from accidental exposure or intentional misuse.
Transfer Unused Medicine to Authorized Collectors for Disposal:
Remove expired, unwanted, or unused medicines from your home as quickly as possible. The Redwood County Sheriff’s Office/Redwood Falls Police Department and Renville County Sheriff’s Office sponsor medicine take-back programs, sometimes called “drop-boxes,” to assist consumers in safely disposing of their unused medicines.
Do NOT Flush Medicines:
This practice can harm the beneficial bacteria that break down waste in septic systems and wastewater treatment plants. Municipal wastewater treatment facilities are not designed to remove all of the ingredients from the medicines in the treatment process. Untreated, or partially treated, pharmaceuticals are then released into nearby lakes, rivers, or groundwater.
Sharps/Needle Disposal
Used sharps/needle products are NOT accepted through the recycling system. Learn how to dispose of these items properly. Some garbage and most recyclables are hand sorted. Loose sharps containers in these containers can endanger employees.
Redwood County Residents:
Call Southwest Health and Human Services for specific information regarding safe disposal of used needles/syringes and other Sharps products: 507-637-4041
Storing Used Sharps Correctly
- Do NOT store sharps in glass bottles, aluminum cans, coffee cans, milk jugs, or plastic bottles.
- You can purchase a sharps container or ask your health care provider or pharmacy if they can give you one.
- If you plan to dispose of your sharps through a mail-back service, choose a service first and check their instructions.
- Place needles in point-first and don’t fill more than half-full.
Renville County Residents:
Call Renville County Public Health for specific information regarding safe disposal of used needles/syringes and other Sharps products: 320-523-2570
Immediately Destroying Sharps at Home
- Needle cutter or clippers: These devices remove the needle from syringes and store them in the cutters case. They are often much cheaper than needle melters, or grinders, and can fit in a pocket. The plastic part of the clipped syringe may be disposed in the trash (not in the recycling!). Once the cutter is full, it should be disposed of in an approved sharps container or via a mail-back service.
- Needle grinder or melter: Once the needle, or lancet, is destroyed the remaining syringe, and melted metal, can be safely disposed of in the garbage (not the recycling container!).
Disposing of Household Sharps
- Household sharps collection sites: In Minnesota, it is up to each pharmacy, healthcare facility, city and county to decide whether they want to collect household sharps from citizens. Many counties offer free or low-cost household sharps collection sites. Most healthcare facilities do not accept household sharps from patients, however, a few pharmacies in Minnesota do.
- Do not bring household sharps to a medication disposal box.
- Dispose of prefilled syringes, such as EpiPenTM or NarcanTM injectors, with your household sharps.
- If your sharps container does not close properly (do NOT overfill), use strong tape to secure the lid or openings.
- Mail-back programs: You may purchase pre-paid household sharps mailers to send your sharps to a disposal facility. Check with your health care provider or pharmacist or search online for available services.
- NEVER place loose sharps into your Municipal Solid Waste (garbage) or recycling.
- NEVER put sharps containers into your Municipal Solid Waste or recycling container.
